Rovers Saturday team finally played there second game of the season after a 3 week break due to weather postponements and also Moorside U21’s failing to raise a team for last Saturdays County Cup game.
Todays opponents were Fielden Park who had started the season badly however with 37 players signed on you never know what team you’ll be playing against. This was the case today as half the team were different to the team that started Fielden’s previous league fixture.
Rovers started brightly and tested the goalkeeper on 3 occasions within the first 5 minutes. Unfortunately for him he was beaten on the 4th attempt as Kyle was played through and dinked the ball into the bottom corner for 1 nil. 10 minutes later via poor defending by Rovers and failing to clear found a ball played through Rovers defence for the Fielden striker to slot pass Alex for 1 - 1. Straight from the restart Rovers went searching for the goal to retake the lead. Again the Fielden keeper pulled off some heroic saves to keep out Rovers but Rovers persistence paid off. A ball was played into Lee around the penalty spot who then placed the ball onto his right foot after dropping the shoulder to his marker and fired the ball into the corner for 2-1.
Two minutes later a cross from Ste found Anthony Vasquez who guided the ball into the net via his head (or shoulder depending on the angle) for 3-1. However the two goal lead was short-lived. 50 seconds from Rovers nearly making it 4-1 and killing the game off Fielden pulled a goal back in identical fashion to there first goal. Shouts of offside were waved away from the referee as Fielden made it 3-2. The half then fizzled out to finish 3-2 to Rovers.
After a honest and frank team talk at half time Rover started the second half much better and raced into a 5- 2 lead. Two goals in 5 minutes of comical fashion set the tone of the second half. Rovers fourth was scored by Josh Breen who dinked a lovely cross to the far post only for the keeper to be blinded by the sun and flap at the ball to help it into the net. Shortly after Rovers fifth was scored direct from a corner. Manager Stu advised Ste to swing the ball in knowing the sun was causing the keeper problems. End result was a lovely in swinging cross that dinked the post and nestled into the net.
Now at this point Rovers were 5-2 and cruising. And then the game completely changed. A rare Fielden attack saw them cross the ball into the attacker. The cross took a knock of Ste however the attacker was clearly in an offside position when the ball was played. The attacker then calmly slotted into the net for 5-3. The referee waved away Rovers objections to which Rovers felt they had been done and voiced their displeasure to the Ref. This lead to Ste being sinbinned for 10 minutes. To make matters worse a minute later and another dubious decision from the ref against Rovers saw them awarded a free kick. Again to Jacks displeasure and his actions led to the ref sinbinning him also. Rovers now had to play the next 9 minutes with 9 men.
After a reshuffle and to Rovers credit and professionalism Rovers took control & played the ball into corners and attacked when required. In this 9 minutes Rovers could have easily have made it 6-3. Once Ste and Jack were back on the pitch the 3 goal advantage was restored. Josh Breen crossed the ball from the right to catch the keeper unawares who fumbled the ball into the net. 6-3 Rovers.
Rovers could have easily at this point gone on to score further goals but lacklustre finishing will hopefully not come back to bite us.
The last kick of the game saw Fielden score there fourth after some lacklustre defending for 6-4.
Lots to learn from the game whish was discussed at full time. We’ll take the positives in winning after playing poorly, to control the game when with 9 men and to reverse last year’s defeat in the same fixture. Onto next weeks return fixture in the 1st round of the Divisional cup at Rushford Park. 10am kick off.
Also to note fair play to Fielden who didn’t give up and there attitude was summed up with the strikers celebration scoring there consolation 4th goal with the last kick of the game. We know were up for a battle next Saturday.
