Scorers: Kyle x 4, Anthony V x 2, Terry x 1
Rovers Saturday team finally played there first game of the season opening up at newly renamed Manchester Wanderers (formerly George FC).
The sun was shining and no wind in sight however even though the grass was cut the markings were poor and all the cut grass was nicely left on the surface.
The first 5 minutes were really cagey between the two teams as both teams got used to the pitch conditions. It took though only 8 minutes for Rovers to open the scoring. Following an attack in the box Josh Breen picked up the loose ball on the by line and placed a lovely cross to the back post to which Anthony Vasquez nodded in.
2 nil followed swiftly after as Kyle was played in and neatly dinked the ball of over the keeper.
The goals now came like London busses. Kyle was upended in the box and stepped up to score the resulting penalty. 3 nil. Soon after Terry glanced a header from a corner onto a Wanderers player who diverted the ball into his own net for 4 nil.
Rovers were awarded another penalty on the half hour mark but this time Kyle saw his penalty finely saved however within 2 minutes Kyle got his revenge and his hat-trick when from outside the box saw his effort sail into the roof of the net. 5 nil. Before halftime Kyle like his second was played in on goal and he rounded the keeper for 6 nil and his fourth of the game.
Half time 6 nil to Rovers.
2nd half was the total opposite. The tempo was not there and passes were not sticking. Decision making both at the back and upfront saw Rovers stagger through the half. Wanderers got a deserved goal from there 2nd half display when Rovers defence were caught napping giving the Wanderers striker a free shot at goal with Alex no chance of saving. 6-1.
Rovers then pressed to at least make sure the 2nd half was not lost and Anthony Vasquez was put through to calmly round the keeper and slot the ball into an empty net. 7-1. That is how the game finished.
Lots of positives to take and also lots to build on following the 2nd half display. The competition will most certainly be much stronger next Saturday as we travel to face last season’s bogey team Parrswood Thursday.
Great to see Callum and Sam make their competitive debuts for the Saturday team. It’s also good to see a strong squad of 15 with 5 players missing through injury, illness and being away with one soaking up the sun in Greece.
