On the back of 3 successive defeats Rovers needed to get back to winning ways and to get points on the board urgently. Today they played Parrswood Thursday who last season had beaten Rovers in all three of the meetings between the two teams last season.
Rovers started the better of the two teams with some neat football causing Parrswood problems. After 15 minutes a throwing on the right hand side found Anthony Vasquez in the area. With his back to goal he shifted his body to turn his marker to set the ball up onto his left foot to arrow the ball into the corner. 1 nil Rovers. 10 minutes later again down the right Sam Greaves found himself on the by line and arrowed a ball across goal to find Anthony Vasquez to tap the ball home for 2 nil. Rovers were on fire at this point however in true Rovers fashion the fire was easily distinguished. A poor cross form Rovers right hand side when attacking into the area led to Parrswood breaking away with a long ball finding the striker who went one on one with Anto and easily scored for 2-1. Within 5 minutes another break in the form of a long ball from Parrswood found there beefy striker who shrugged off Terry to cross the ball into the box. Ben Costello made a great challenge on the oncoming Parrswood striker only for the Ref to deem the challenge dangerous and gave Parrswood a penalty to which they converted for 2-2. From the restart Rovers attacked and the ball found its way to Anthony Vasquez in the box. Luckily for Rovers his marker went to swipe for the ball however he took Anthony clean out which resulted in a penalty for Rovers. Up stepped Ste who converted for 3-2 Rovers. Celebrations were short lived as 5 minutes before halftime a corner from Parrswood was swung in directly into Rovers goal for 3-3. The half then was played out to end 3-3.
Stu gave his half time team talk with some home truths being issued. The subject matter being naivety. All three of Parrswood goals were of Rovers making and with a 2 nil lead Rovers should have used there heads when dealing with counter attacks and when to also clear the ball to areas of safety and in dealing with the long balls. The team and formation was changed with both subs being deployed.
Within 5 minutes of the restart Josh found himself being manhandled by his marker not once but twice but once away was then taken out by said same player. However he managed to get up with the ball at his feet to (which the ref played some great advantage) to spray the ball to Sam Taylor on the right who’s cross found the head of Anthony Vasquez who nodded in Rovers 4th and his third for his first Rovers hattrick. 4-3 Rovers. Rovers held out for the next 15 minutes dealing with Parrswood long balls. On 65 minutes a break by Rovers found Josh on the edge of the box who shifted the ball on to his right foot to evade his marker and placed the ball into the bottom corner to give the Parrswood keeper no chance. 5-3 Rovers.
This didn’t deter Parrswood who kept playing the long ball game to which Rovers just had to grind this period of play out. Once Rovers did this they broke only for the Parrswood player to bring down Josh when through on goal.. Unfortunately for the Parrswood player he was the last man and was subsequently sent off. Stu then changed personnel to get some fresh legs on and it paid dividend as Andy returned to the pitch and his one two’s with Josh found Josh one on one with the Parrswood keeper only to round him and tap the ball home for 6-3. Rovers had further chances to increase the score line with Josh smashing the bar from an acute angle. The game ended 6-3 to Rovers.
The score line flattered Parrswood due to how they got the goals but the main thing is the win and the 3 points on the board which enabled Rovers to leapfrog Parrswood in the table.
Next Saturday the 30th we entertain unbeaten and current title favourites Heston at Rushford Park. 10:15am kick off.
