Rovers entertained table pace setters Manchester Celtic in the hope of turning around the previous weeks defeat. For the second time this season the squad was light on numbers meaning Anthony Wainman having to transfer his Sunday goalkeeping skills to the Saturday team. Within 5 minutes he was called into action. A through ball from the half way line which evaded the Rovers midfield and defence which led to Anto running out to clear however the Celtic striker beat him to the ball but unfortunately the striker didn’t beat Anto who wiped the striker out. The point of contact was in the box so the referee had an easy decision to make. Penalty to Celtic. The striker stepped up but Anto SAVED and then SAVED the follow up.
Following this the game got scrappy and Rovers really couldn’t penetrate the Celtic back line. With 25 minutes gone a corner from Celtic found there player at the back post who was un challenged to head the ball into the net for 1 nil. Apart from obviously the goal being conceded the way that the player was unchallenged was very disappointing. 10 minutes later Celtic were issued a free kick 20 yards out. The free kick was a silly foul to give away which meant an opportunity for Celtic to have a shot on goal. A shot they did have and in turn went through the wall and into Rovers net for 2 nil. The half played out and finished 2 nil to Celtic.
The second half for Rovers was very similar to the first. Lots of effort and hard work but no real quality to create breakthroughs to trouble the Celtic keeper with shots few and far between. Just like the first half it just wasn’t to be Rovers day in terms of luck. Sam Rathbone came off the bench and found himself in the box ready to shoot only for a Celtic defender to put in a brilliant tackle. Unfortunately the defender took out Sam at the same time which resulted in Sam being injured.
On 60 minutes Celtic were issued another free kick circa 25 yards from goal for another silly foul which Rovers didn’t need to give away. The Celtic player stepped up and arrowed the ball into the top corner. 3 nil Celtic. This didn’t deter Rovers as they persisted with trying to attack the Celtic defence but just could not get any clear shots on goal. On 80 minutes a break down the right saw a Celtic player neatly chip the ball over Anto into the net. This the only goal of the 5 that Celtic were made to work for. On 89 minutes another break saw a soft shot trickle into the net after Anto had made the initial save. 5 nil and this is how the game ended.
In all honesty there is no doubt Manchester Celtic will be up there come the end of the season challenging for the title however the result did flatter them and got the luck on the day but that’s football.
We go again next Saturday the 23rd as Rovers travel to Gately to face Parrswood Thursday 10:15am kick off.
