Scorers Bobo & Josh
Another Saturday and another depleted squad. This meaning the Manager had to step up and be Goalkeeper for the day. The game was literally a game of two halves. The second half resembling that of an England batting collapse.
Rovers in the first half enjoyed lots of possession passing it along the back four and keeper matching the drills Graham has done in the past. This restricted Radclyffe as they played with one striker. Eventually Radclyffe got hold of the ball and started to press more with several crosses evading the incoming forwards and midfielders. Radclyffe eventually forced a corner. Stuart assumed the ball would land near the 6 yard box but unfortunately a Radclyffe player outjumped his marker at the near post to nod in for 1 nil.
Again, from the restart it was more of possession football from Rovers at the back. However a pressure release diagonal ball evaded the back line of Radclyffe to which their full back had to commit a foul. The resulting free kick was whipped in and after a failed clearance Bobo on his Saturday team debut smashed the ball in from 6 yards to make it 1 -1.
Unfortunately, this score line didn’t last long. Radclyffe attacked and a cross field ball found the winger who cut in from the right, and yet again Stuart second guessed that he would cross but the player shot and squeezed the ball into the bottom corner with the help of the post to make it 2-1. For the remainder of the half Rovers battled to restrict Radclyffe with long shots and even more possession football from the back without even worrying the Radclyffe defence. With 5 minutes of the half remaining a rare Rovers attack found Seb free in the box, but he could only guide his header into the arms of the keeper. Halftime 2-1.
The half time message was clear. Keep doing what we’re doing and stay in the game as long as possible. The hard work from all 12 players was there to clearly see. Unfortunately, within 10 minutes of the restart the message had clearly been forgotten as Rovers found themselves 6-1 down. The crisp passing at the back was not as efficient and several mistakes of misplaced passes led to goals galore. Josh Davenport scored a consolation to make it 6-2 direct from a free kick. Moments later Yousef had chased there keeper down and the rebounded ball fell to his feet, had an open goal from 18 yards, but a first time shot meant the ball went high and wide.
Radclyffe went to add more goals through dodgy goal keeping (yours truly) and misplaced passes. The Score ending up 11-2.
One to forget and it’s often the case with County Cup games with Rovers Saturday team only winning one County Cup game in nine years. Bad day at the office and added to that we had no natural goalkeeper a squad of 12 players including two inexperienced 17-year olds who gave there all but despite all that we were well and truly beaten by a far better team.
Now onwards an upwards as next week we go searching for Cup glory in the first round of the divisional cup against Parrswood Thursday in the first round on Saturday the 27th of October at William Scholes Playing fields Gately. This one being a 10am kick off.
