Rovers took a break from league action (yes you heard it right after only after two games) for the first round of the Divisional Cup. This was also Rovers first home game of the season. The opponents being the ever improving Fielden Park. With another full squad to choose from, picking the starting 11 is becoming a welcoming headache for the Manager.
In all honesty the first half was one to forget for both teams. A very scrappy affair where Rovers like the week before found themselves sinking to there opponents level and not letting the quality shine through. A collection of misplaced passes, passes missing the midfield, 50p headers and poor crossing / final balls meant it gave the opponents hope as the game went on. The nearest Rovers got was a Kyle snap shot on the edge of the box which hit the outside of the post. Fielden’s only attempt came from a defensive error which led to the striker hitting his strike straight at Alex whose reflexes kept the tie at nil nil and that’s how the half ended.
An honest assessment from Terry at halftime and Stu’s calmer approach made sure that the 11 selected knew they were lucky to start the second half. With a chance of progressing to the Quarter Finals up for grabs the only way Rovers would not make them would be defeating themselves.
The second half Rovers started the brighter and Kyle was played through and on the angle manged to poke the ball passed the keeper but the power was not enough to cross the line. The keeper managed to scramble back and make the save. Just as the second half was going the way of the first a double substitution on 57 minutes led to Josh Davenport and Lee Ford coming on. Josh immediately found himself in the box and set up Andy Murphy who had the simple task of passing the ball into an empty net. 1 nil Rovers. To compound matters further for Fielden within the next 10 minutes Sam R found himself in the box to dodge the keeper and roll the ball into the net for 2 nil. With 10 minutes left the ball broke to Lee on the left on the edge of the box. He shifted the ball to his right foot and calmly curled ball into the opposite corner.
Rovers from this point had all the possession and Fielden couldn’t cope with the passing and movement. Further goals should have come but didn’t. The game ended 3 nil to Rovers who now find themselves into the Quarter Finals.
It was a better second half performance. The clean sheet was much needed and it was great to get all the allocated subs on the pitch for the third game in a row. Again like last week Fielden are improving and heavy defeats they have had a the start of the season will be long gone from what we have seen over the last two games.
Back to league action next Saturday the 26th as Rovers host North Manchester Athletic. Rushford Park 10:15am kick off.
