Scorers Jack, Gavin and Josh x 2
This was Rovers first ever meeting against fellow league newcomers Broadheath who were a mix of youth and experience. The first 10 minutes was very scrappy as both teams tried to find their feet in the game. The breakthrough came on around 12 minutes when Rovers were awarded a free kick some 25 yards from goal. Ben Costello hit the free kick which beat the keeper but not the bar but fortunately the ball fell to Jack Roache on the 6 yard line who pounced to bundle the ball home for 1 nil.
The turning point of the game (a very big one) came on 15 minutes when Rovers Ben Proctor committed a foul some 30 yards from goal. Out of nowhere the Ref branded a red card interpreting the player had gone over the ball. This was a shock to both teams. Soon after with Rovers now having to change shape and regroup found themselves 2-1 down within 10 minutes of the sending off. A break on the left-hand side found a Broadheath player cutting inside and firing a shot past Alex for 1-1. Then a break on the right found the winger one on one with Alex and again fired a shot past him. Once over the shock Rovers settled down and got back into the game but not really testing the Broadheath keeper. The half finished 2-1 to Broadheath.
2nd half started scrappy with Rovers marginally the better side but with 55 minutes gone Rovers were given a soft free kick some 25 – 30 yards from goal and around right of central to the goal. Gav stepped up to swing it in however he got such a good connection the ball went straight into the top corner eluding the keeper to make it 2-2. Rovers then did exactly what they did in the first half after getting back into the game. Broadheath broke down Rovers right and their winger went straight through on goal to slot past Alex for 3-2. Carbon copy of the first two goals. Rovers huffed and puffed to break down Broadheath and with 10 men found themselves the better of the teams. On 70 minutes from Gavin’s in swinging corner into a compact / crowded box Rovers were awarded a penalty. Josh stepped up and fired the resulting penalty into the bottom corner. 3-3. 5 minutes later another in swinging Gavin corner was half cleared to Josh on the edge of the box who first time volleyed back straight into the goal. 4-3 Rovers.
Rovers then defended solidly and broke several times to see the game out. And then the sucker punch. Halfway through the 7 minutes injury time, Broadheath scrapped a corner and at the wrong time Rovers fell asleep to leave the Broadheath player unmarked to head home to share the points.
Looking back, it was 2 points dropped but to play at this level with 10 men for 75 minutes of the game was a testament to the squad compared to the performance that was on show the week before.
Next up is Brownly Albion (on Saturday the 29th at Scholes fields in Gately) who currently sit second in the table so a big test for the squad to bounce back to winning ways.
